Area of Study :

This course stresses on the relational context between foreign policy and international relations. This is carried out whilst conducting a thorough analysis of policies processes on all of the following levels: 1) the individual level of analysis putting special focus on political leaders and actors, 2) the state level of analysis through the functions of state institutions, bureaucracies and the people and 3) the system level of analysis concentrating on interactions between the states on the international level. In light of this, students practice critical analysis of the before, during and after phase of foreign policies and the impact these phases have on states particularly on their domestic policies and popular support. Course Goals: • Enable students to focus on the individual, domestic and international factors which lead to foreign policy decision-making. • Comprehend and analyze certain decisions made in foreign policy and the foreign policy tools which were utilized in these decisions.

Course outcomes:

a. Knowledge and Understanding:

1- Define the role of psychological, institutional, domestic and international factors in the making of foreign policy decisions, such as: pressure groups, international alliances… etc.
2- Recognize current foreign policy issues on the national, regional and international levels and the mechanism of taking decisions on such issues, such as: The Renaissance Dam, the American-Russian relations, and the pressure groups in various capital cities.
3- Identify the importance and frameworks of issues or concepts of foreign policy decisions, such as: the bureaucratic approach, the personal approach, and other approaches.

b. Intellectual Skills:

1- Employ a critical way of thinking in assessing different foreign policy decisions in different states.
2- Deepen knowledge of international relations.
3- Emphasize on understanding the challenges faced by different policy-makers when confronting different foreign policy situations.

c. Professional and Practical Skills:

1- Relate and connect between historical events and decision-making theories with contemporary foreign policy issues, such as the Arab-Israeli Conflict, or the Arab protest movements.
2- Employ the gained knowledge in the analysis of a variety of case studies.
3- Illustrate the art of research and use of methodologies in essay writing.

d. General and Transferable Skills:

1- Construct logical arguments for or against different foreign policy decisions.
2- Allow to effectively coordinate with others in a discussion.
3- Evaluate news sources and their credibility when reporting on decision-making.
