This course introduces the relationship between the Egyptian society and politics in modern history of Egypt. The course starts with the impact of the French invasion on the understanding of societal and political institutions, and continues with Muhammad Ali, the Egyptian Renaissance (Nahda), and the revolutions of Orabi, 1952 and 2011. Throughout this, the course keeps a straight focus on the interactions and changes in the political systems.
Course Goals:
• Drawing the main argument from a text
• Presenting original ideas both verbally and in short written passages.
• Formulating a critical response to existing claims.
• Being conversant on Egypt’s contemporary political trends and their historical antecedents.
