Area of Study :

This course focuses on understanding the impact of the political, religious and military regimes in various African countries since the colonial era. The course's first part includes a historical background on the scramble for Africa and history of the cartography of Africa during the colonial era. Secondly, it is investigating prime academic literature and texts on the factors of, but not limited to, the following: religious movements, resistance development, militia formation, nationalism and national governments. The third section is empirical in which it is based on critically analyzing the current developments in different African countries using different medium of analysis: movies, documentaries, research, field visits to embassies, cultural centers and the like, as well as attending public lectures. Course Goals: • Draw correlations between the historical developments of the colonial era in Africa; • Address prime challenges (economic, social, psychological and political) in colonial and post-colonial Africa; • Comprehend and analyze different case studies using visual aid as well as text books and literature on the African colonial and post-colonial era; • Provide sufficient ability to compare and contrast between elements of the African experience and that of the Arab countries, as well as the impact of colonial and post-colonial Africa on trade, political power games and economic calculations; regionally and internationally.

Course outcomes:

a. Knowledge and Understanding:

1- Define relationship between religion and politics in different case studies in Africa;
2- Recognize common traits between historical developments of different countries and be able to analyze their raison d’etre
3- Identify the reasons behind current political, economic, religious and military structures in various cases studies in Africa.

b. Intellectual Skills:

1- Explain in details and using sufficient visual and written materials, the main ideas understood and substantial problematic proposed throughout the course
2- Combine historical understanding of the African colonial phase, with how this affects today’s various societies, political systems and economies in Africa

c. Professional and Practical Skills:

1- Relate between different countries and their experience and draw relationships between the commons and differences between them while understanding why
2- Illustrate a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical literature discussed, while being able to apply the theories and ideas studied in analyzing a chosen case study or even in colonial or post-colonial Africa
3- Employ knowledge and theories to find solution or propose scenarios to current affairs, and indicate how these may have an influence on the Arab region in general and Egyptian case in particular.

d. General and Transferable Skills:

1- Allow the exposure to difference references and sources of knowledge on the same topics in the course in order to gain a comprehensive knowledge
2- Expose and challenge own ability to higher level texts, during research and presentation to intensify linguistic and analytical skills
3- Compare and contrast other world examples during their colonial periods to that of the African example such as the Arab region as well as examples and cases in Latin America and Asia
