This course provides students with an informed view of historical, modern and practical diplomacy in a globalized and interconnected world. It sheds light on the history of diplomacy through the Pharaonic, Greek and Roman civilizations. Additionally, the course focuses on the two Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic and Consular Relations in 1961 and 1963, which regulate diplomatic and consular functions and structures. For instance, heads of diplomatic missions and their members, responsibilities of the diplomat, difference between consults and diplomatic representatives and many other aspects. Moreover, the course focuses on diplomacy in international organizations and international relations through studying nature of diplomacy, diplomatic methods and negotiations, the operation of diplomacy in specific areas and international conflicts.
Course Goals:
• Identify the practical and legal rules governing the activity of diplomatic missions, consular offices, permanent missions at international organizations and other forms of international relations.
• Explain the Vienna Conventions that regulate the diplomatic and consular functions and structures.
• Distinguish between particular forms of institution that represent states and international organizations in their mutual relations.
