Area of Study :

The course consists of 12 comprehensive units which cover every part of the requirement of the PET examination in detail. It provides preparation, practice, information and advice to ensure that students are fully prepared for the official PET exam. The course includes an official past exam paper supplied by Cambridge University ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). It also provides extra guidance for writing essays and papers. Course Goals: • Prepare students to successfully complete the official PET exam. • Bring students up to the level through which they can produce simple connected text on different topics and start working on academic papers. • Respond to auditory cues through body language or gesture e.g. turn head towards an alarm, look at person who is talking.

Course outcomes:

a. Knowledge and Understanding:

1- Comprehend a range of purposes and with a variety of audiences to express well- developed, well-organized ideas dealing with more challenging topics.
2- Learn to evaluate the organizational patterns of some more challenging spoken texts and some characteristic language features.

b. Intellectual Skills:

1- Analyze a wide range of well-structured and well-presented literary and factual texts for a wide variety of purposes and audiences using increasingly challenging topics, ideas, issues and written language features.
2- Interpret own texts in terms of how well they have been written, how effectively they present the subject matter and how they influence the reader.

c. Professional and Practical Skills:

1- Attain an extensive range of texts with increasing content demands and responds to themes and issues.
2- Experience a techniques used by writers to create certain effects, to use language creatively, to position the reader in various ways and to construct different interpretations of experience.

d. General and Transferable Skills:

1- Develop a comprehensive range of skills and strategies appropriate to the type of text being read.
2- Spell most common words accurately and uses a range of strategies to spell unfamiliar words.

UNIT 5: Talk about rules and regulations, crime and punishment. Write a letter to the editor of a magazine, responding to the article on cam phones. 4 2
Midterm Exam
UNIT 6: Talk about coincidences and strange events. Talk about beliefs and superstitions. Write a true story from your own family history. 4 2
UNIT 7: Talk about errands and solving problems, things you do yourself, things you get done somewhere else and things that need to be fixed. Write a proposal presenting a solution to a problem at a school. 4 2
UNIT 8: Describe other people’s emotions and personal qualities. Talk about hypothetical situations in the past. Write a note of apology for something you did in the past. 4 2
UNIT 9: Talk about possessions and being materialistic; discuss money and money arrangements. Write an article about your classmates and things they feel they couldn’t live without. 4 2
UNIT 10: Discuss hypothetical situations in the past and talk about celebrities and being famous. Write a paragraph about someone you know who has achieved success, and explain why that person became successful. 4 2
UNIT 11: Describe social and urban change. Describe environmental problems. Write an article about a new technology you use and how it has changed your life. 4 2
UNIT 12: Talk about planning a career. Discuss different jobs people do. Talk about hopes and expectations in the future. Write a letter of application for a job in response to an ad. 4 2
