Mission and Goals

Mission

This department concentrates on how media and communication reflect on politics, governance, and the future of media democracy. We explore with the students’ new visions that interplay between politicians, economists, journalists, governing systems and citizens as evolving media landscapes that connect all these elements.

As technology, culture, and geopolitics undergo major transformations in the world and in the media arena, in our department we project on how the way societies make demands, contest ideas, and negotiate the struggle for power. Our curriculum enhances critical thinking of our students to examine global crises, mass protests, sustainable development, ideological realignments, economic changes, etc.... We encourage our students to understand how political ideas are crafted, communicated, and mediated through people, symbols, and technologies. We take a broad view of “media” and “politics,” analyzing political communication across local, national, and transnational contexts; from traditional to social media and the everyday interactions that bind or break societies. By studying the dynamic relationships among media, industry, economy and politics, we shed light on some of the most pressing questions of our time such as, how the role of information is shaping trust and political engagement nationally and internationally through communication practices and theoretical frameworks.
